The Next Generation: Chris Kewley

This interview is part of the article The Next Generation.

Chris Kewley – General Manager
Nobles Marine, Leesburg, Fla.

What do you see as the industry’s biggest challenge?

Many large obstacles exist in our industry, but if I had to select one it would be the ever-increasing cost for the entry-level buyer. With the cost of materials increasing, environmental regulations, and volume of sales decreasing this will be a difficult challenge for the industry moving forward.

What makes you optimistic about the industry?

I am optimistic that as we see the large population of baby boomers start to retire we will continue to see demand for boating products.

How can we attract more young people to the industry as boaters?

I believe the best efforts here would involve getting youngsters involved in the lifestyle.  Whether this is through the industry tapping into the local Boy/Girl Scout troops, local clubs, fishing tournaments for children, etc. Young people of today are exposed to so many entertainment options that the industry is going to need to be proactive in putting itself out there. I know personally we have taken numerous children (friends of both of my daughters) out for a day of boating, and they have an absolute blast.  We have a great lifestyle to sell; we just need to expose as many people as we can to it.

What do you think the younger generation brings to the industry?

I believe the younger generation brings a fresh perspective to the industry. We all know that some things are done a certain way because it has to be done that way, but many times things are done a particular way just because it has always been done that way. A fresh set of eyes will bring new ideas and innovative solutions that have never been thought of before.

How did you get involved in boating?

When I visited my grandfather in New York growing up, he would take me trout fishing in the local river. After moving to Florida, my best friend’s family had a boat, and we enjoyed many wonderful trips on the waterways of central Florida.

Why did you join the YLAC?

I joined YLAC in an effort to give back to the industry. I believe our industry needs to have a united, dealer body organization that represents dealer’s interests in dealing with the challenges we all face. The MRAA is that organization.

What can boat builders and other manufacturers do to help dealers be more successful?

I believe that dealers should be treated fairly in regards to all of their dealings with their respective manufacturers. It starts with a simple, fair and mutual contract. Dealers need to understand what manufacturers go through, and likewise manufacturers need to understand what dealers go through. It has been said over and over again, but it truly needs to be a partnership. A true partnership is the only way to justify the investment on both sides, and deliver products and service exceeding the customers’ expectations.

How has your perspective as a young leader helped you improve your company?

We have and continue to bring our company current with the market place trends. We are trying to modernize our facilities and computer systems, while holding on to our small town family dealership charm.
