ALEXANDRIA, Va. – The Boat Owners Association of the United States has stepped in to provide sponsorship of the U.S. Coast Guard and U.S. Power Squadrons’ Vessel Safety Check program for the next three years, according to a release from the group.

The USCG and U.S. Power Squadrons are expecting to perform more than 200,000 voluntary vessel safety checks this year, which are provided at no cost at boat ramps, marinas and boat clubs.

“A vessel safety check is done as a courtesy and with no risk to the boater – you won’t be in trouble if discrepancies are found,” BoatUS Foundation Assistant Director of Boating Safety Ted Sensenbrenner said in a statement. “What it will do is point out, in a very friendly manner, where you can improve your boat’s safety and help educate you on the value of recreational boating safety.”

The checks ensure that boaters have the correct safety equipment onboard, as well as properly displayed registration numbers and documentation. Inspectors also recommend items for boaters to have on board as well as check for required items.

Locations of the Vessel Safety Checks can be found on the Vessel Safety Check website, as well as a “Virtual” Vessel Check and the top reasons boaters fail safety checks.
