DMT Donates State of the Art Tool Sharpening Equipment
Marlborough, MA—October 25, 2012—Whether recreating the clean lines of a 1930s fishing boat or bringing back to life the glamour of a 19th century luxury yacht, precision is key to the art of boatbuilding and restoration. Now student craftsmen at the highly acclaimed International Yacht Restoration School (IYRS) in Newport, Rhode Island, will hone their skills with help from DMT Diamond Machining Technology, the worldwide leader in knife and tool sharpening.
Based in Marlborough, Massachusetts, DMT is donating several of its Made in the USA Diamond Sharpeners to IYRS. These include three 10-inch DuoSharp with Base in Coarse/Extra Coarse grit combination, three 10-inch DuoSharp with Base in Extra-Fine/Fine grit combination, and one Dia-Flat Diamond Lapping Plate. A DMT staff member is also making a presentation to students providing an overview of the products and a demonstration of their sharpening applications.
“Wooden boatbuilding and restoration demands a high level of skill and craftsmanship, so our students need to become proficient at sharpening hand tools. We like to use DMT sharpeners because they are unique and effective,” explains Clark Poston, Director of Student and Industry Relations at IYRS. “As a small nonprofit, IYRS depends on support from the industry in many forms including donated products and equipment, and presentations from manufacturers. This kind of partnership and support program from DMT is crucial to the success of our programs and the success of our graduates.”
DMT’s 10-inch DuoSharp with Base bench stones feature two sides of interrupted diamond surface in different grit combinations to provide two-stage knife sharpening with fast, clean and consistent results every time. In addition, a continuous zone of diamond abrasive allows for sharpening small and pointed tools. The base features non-skid rubber feet and provides 2-inch knuckle clearance to ensure safe and secure sharpening. Each DMT Dia-Flat Diamond Lapping Plate is hand-certified for flatness less than .0005 in. across its surface and is manufactured using DMT’s proprietary Diamond Hardcoat Technology to outlast any other diamond coating on the market. It is the superior choice for flattening conventional waterstones, oilstones and Arkansas stones.
“We are thrilled to put our sharpening tools to the test in the hands of this next generation of boat builders and restorers,” says DMT President Mark Brandon. “These men and women reflect the best in American fine craftsmanship. It’s the same kind of care and craftsmanship we put into each of our products.”
