About a quarter of the remaining workforce at Brunswick Corp.’s Hatteras-CABO Yachts has been let go.

It was the third round of layoffs at the company’s New Bern, N.C., facility since Brunswick announced in January that the two brands were for sale. In the two earlier cuts, both in January, a total of 145 workers were terminated. With the latest layoffs, the plant now employs about 275 people.

Brunswick purchased Hatteras in 2001 and CABO in 2006. Both brands remain for sale.

Quick sell them off to the Chinese …. you know the same ones who bought Sunseeker before they figure out what they got themselves into!

In this global economy everyone speaks of, there are those in this industry who fail to understand that there are far to many brands for the market to sustain. I have preached this for years that it’s easy to get into boat building but far more difficult to sustain a profit.

While it may be sad to see some iconic brands go away, this industry, like the auto business must loose some brands in the process of finding it’s way back to profitability and new ways to market. The foot print of this industry is far smaller than it has been in over 50 years when you look at the numbers of new boat sales. So who in their right mind is going to step up and buy premium brands that are failing?

No the down turn won’t last forever and in some segments there are some impressive gains. But look where it is, aluminum and then look at the price points folks. We have lost the entry level consumer who no longer can afford a 20 foot bowrider for the family because it has been priced out of their reach. The 20 foot pontoon on the other hand, has more room easy to tow and fun for the entire family yet priced to meet almost any budget.

The high end of the market right now is taking a beating, just look at Sea Ray’s number and you’ll understand. Large cruisers and off shore fish boats will be the last to recover I’m afraid. Some big names wont.

Good luck Brunswick,,, you’re going to need it.
