HENDERSON, N.C. — After recently celebrating its 40th anniversary, Florida Marine Tanks achieved another milestone. The company was awarded two US patents, the first for its fuel tank with internal evaporative emission system, US patent 8,807,162, and another for its fuel tank with internal fuel shutoff system, US patent 8,807,160. Both help Florida Marine Tanks’ products comply with EPA regulations on diurnal emissions.
“Being awarded these US patents is validation of our company’s hard work and quality products. We’re very proud of our knowledgeable and skilled engineering team,” said Rosemarie Fiori, Florida Marine Tanks president. “Creating EPA compliant tanks is an industry effort and we’re all working together to make boating safer and more enjoyable. These patents help us build the systems needed to do just that.”
Invented by Florida Marine Tanks’ engineering director Orestes Monterrey, the company’s unique systems have all components needed to meet EPA compliance inside the fuel tank. Since all components are internal, redundancy is built into its systems in case of failure.
Other fuel systems have vents, valves and fittings outside the tank. Then, to meet ABYC regulations, the components must be accessible. Often, this means boatbuilders have to change construction models to install access plates or other points of entry. Since Florida Marine Tanks’ system is all internal, no access points are needed and builders don’t have to change the design of the boat.
Florida Marine Tanks custom fabricates tanks from two gallons to more than 1,200 gallons. An IMCI-certified test lab, the company works with many high-profile boatbuilders, including Chaparral-Robalo, Boston Whaler, Sea Ray, Grady White, Thunderbird, Tiara and Hatteras.
