Unemployment drops to 5.6 percent, lowest since 2008

The United States added 252,000 jobs in December, capping off the best year for job creation since 1999, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Friday.

The BLS also revised upward the October and November numbers, meaning 50,000 more jobs than were previously reported. The unemployment rate dropped to 5.6 percent, its lowest mark since June 2008. The 2.952 million new jobs for the year are the most since 1999 and and the 2.861 million private sector jobs the most since 1997.
