Mercury Marine honored by Department of Defense for extraordinary support of employees

FOND DU LAC, Wis. – This week, the Wisconsin Committee for Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve Committee (ESGR), an agency of the Department of Defense, awarded Tim Pickart, a maintenance supervisor at Mercury Marine, with a Patriot Award. The honor was given in recognition of extraordinary support of one his employees, Katchen Tofil, who serves in the U.S. Navy Reserves.

The Patriot Award is presented to employers who not only hire Guard and Reserve members, but also demonstrate superior support to the military employee and his/her family.

According to Mike Williams, ESGR chairman, “Tim has provided outstanding support and cooperation and has exhibited a patriotic spirit, which is reflected in the significance of being a recipient of the Patriot Award.”

“I feel Tim deserves this award because he supports all the time off that I have needed in order to do my duties for the Navy,” said Tofil in her nomination. “The one thing that stands out to me was the time when my mother had a stroke and Tim made it possible for me to take days off of work on an extremely short notice in order for me to make the time for my mother and then the time to fulfill my Navy requirements.”

“I am honored and humbled by this award,” said Pickart. “Strong employees like Katchen are what make me enjoy coming to work and allow me to be successful in my role at Mercury Marine. I appreciate her ongoing commitment to our company and to our country. I feel we have a duty to help our military veterans after they’ve served our country. When we come across a candidate with military background we know they will have the qualities we look for in a new hire such as character, work ethic and the ability to work in a team.”

As the 1.3 million members of the National Guard and Reserve continue to perform an increasing number of unique missions that require extraordinary actions on the part of everyday citizens, ESGR will continue to be the informational agency for the employers of citizen warriors.
