House passes two-month highway bill extension

The U.S. House approved an extension of funding for highways and mass transit (and by extension, the Sport Fish fund) Tuesday.

The Senate is expected to follow suit before it breaks for Memorial Day.

The bill continues funding through July 31 for the Highway Trust Fund. It is the latest of dozens of short-term extensions to transportation funding.

The Sport Fish Restoration and Boating Trust Fund, as authorized by the Wallop-Breaux Act, captures the revenue from that part of the federal fuel tax attributable to motor boat and small engine use. That fund is used to pay for many projects on the state and local level from fisheries conservation to public water access and other infrastructure programs.

Since its inception , theĀ  fund has helped pay for thousands of projects, and stock and protect billions of fish throughout the country.
