It doesn’t seem like anyone is using Google+. Why should we be on it?

People are using Google+, but you’re right, it’s certainly not as popular as Facebook, to name one.

Officially, Google+ has more than 500 million members, making it the second-largest social network after Facebook – but that number comes with a big asterisk. Many people who have a Google+ account don’t even realize they have it, let alone use it regularly. That’s because Google requires people to use a Google+ login to use many of its popular products, such as YouTube.

Estimates for the actual number of users vary greatly and it’s value as a social marketing tool is limited right now.

With all that, it’s absolutely essential that a business have at least a basic profile set up on the service. That’s because Google+ results get prime placement in a Google search. So at the very least, make sure your contact information, website and hours are up to date. Post a photo or two of your location(s) and write a short description of your business. You can get started setting up a business page at www.google.com/+/business/.

If nothing else, it boosts your search engine optimization. At this point, Google+ probably isn’t worth the time commitment of Facebook, but you certainly can’t afford to ignore it.
