This week, a reader asked about photo-sharing app Instagram.

Are any companies using Instagram as part of a social media strategy? How?

This article from Social Media Examiner offers a quick primer on Instagram, along with some tips on using it for business.

We also reached out to Lauren de Vlaming at Dominion Marine Media for some insight. Here are her thoughts:

A sampling of companies, both large/corporate and small/trendy, are using Instagram to drive brand awareness.

If you have the resources to frequently take gorgeous pictures and need to promote you brand, I highly recommend it. But Instagram doesn’t accomplish some of the goals other social platforms do — namely, driving traffic. (Pinterest, which is also a photo viewing/sharing platform, does drive traffic.)

This could change in a few years, or even a few months. But for now, it might not be worth your time, especially if you’re already establishing your presence via other platforms.
